Stephen Leary showed that Great Britain was no fluke for the Cambusters team, comfortably taking pole position from Robert Schaftlein in qualifying. Only 12 competitors submitted qualifying times for this race. Could this be a realisation that the bonus point is just too hard to get?
Championship leader Oliver Roberts once again took the chequered flag with `another great race`, extending his lead over Rene Smit. His cause was further helped by Smit`s shock retirement on lap 18. Roberts margin at the top of the championship is now a significant 24 points. Michal Janak achieved his best result of the season, so far, by finishing 2nd, only 16 seconds behind the race winner. He also drove the fastest lap of the race, although this included two slipstreams. This result has moved Janak to 4th place in the championship. The Cambusters duo of Leary and Donald MacLeod secured 3rd and 4th places respectively, an impressive display from the newcomers. Schaftlein thought he had driven `another flying race`, but had to settle for 5th.
Only 8 of the 19 competitors succeeded in completeing the 45 lap race, with almost half failing to reach the half way stage. Congratulations to Ant Hill Mob Racing`s Stephen Orr and Andrew Clark for finishing in the points for the first time, although both of them did crash out!
Most competitors reported problems at the notorious 2nd chicane, many having having their race cut short there. 3rd Leary was perhaps the most fortunate, clipping the inside of the wall on lap 35 but receiving no damage. Having said that, Grant Reeve found the first corner trickiest, narrowly missing out on earliest retirement to Graham Hawkins.
